Sunday, 4 December 2005 ABC : My Favourite Film Following the success of ” My Favourite Book ”, the ABC went back and polled it’s viewers for ” My Favourite Film ”. IMHO, the Top 10 reflects a major Gen-X bias, which is a good thing ;) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy Amelie Blade Runner The Shawshank Redemption Donnie Darko Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope Pulp Fiction The Princess Bride Gone With The Wind Fight Club The Sound of Music To Kill A Mockingbird 2001: A Space Odyssey Casablanca Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind American Beauty Doctor Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb Monty Python’s Life of Brian Lawrence Of Arabia Apocalypse Now Cinema Paradiso Doctor Zhivago The Matrix The Castle Singin’ in the Rain A Clockwork Orange The Blues Brothers Withnail and I Life is Beautiful The Godfather Moulin Rouge Some Like it Hot Lost in Translation One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest Local Hero The Third Man Brazil Serenity Breakfast at Tiffany’s A Room with a View The Rocky Horror Picture Show Dead Poets Society Harold and Maude The Big Lebowski The Wizard of Oz Out Of Africa Picnic at Hanging Rock The Usual Suspects Cabaret Forrest Gump Monty Python and the Holy Grail The Piano Pirates of the Carribbean - The Curse of the Black Pearl Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back Charlie and the Chocolate Factory The City of Lost Children The African Queen Love Actually Strictly Ballroom Wings of Desire Raiders of the Lost Ark Babette’s Feast The Fifth Element Spirited Away Aliens It’s a Wonderful Life Napoleon Dynamite Rear Window Romeo And Juliet Dirty Dancing Kill Bill: Vol 1. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is a lot darker than the previous 3 movies, but I found it a lot more enjoyable. It had the epic story of good versue evil, as well as the story of the coming of age of three, as the gang gets ready for the Yule ball and have to get a date for the dance. As the summary from IMDB says: Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire takes us deeper into the characters’ minds and the darkness of the Wizarding World. At the Quidditch World Cup, Voldemort’s followers gather and wreak havoc. Then, at Hogwarts, a legendary event takes place. The Triwizard Tournament! The Goblet of Fire judges who gets in and who doesn’t. On the fateful night, three champions are selected. But then the Goblet spits out one other. Harry’s. These two major events point to the return of Lord Voldemort. Dumbledore and the other teachers sense it, but it is inevitable. And Harry is no longer safe at Hogwarts. This fourth installment is the most dramatic, and also the scariest. Let me just say that all does not necessarily end well… As we left the theatre, I pondered the mythology of Harry Potter . The good versus evil theme is pretty uniersal, but it feels to me like Star Wars . I wonder if Harry is Voldemort’s son?
