Microsoft’s New Win-Win Strategy ? My old mate Gary Wisniewski has put forward a very challenging post titled ” Microsoft’s New Win-Win Strategy ” I met Gary way back in 1999 when he was running a web dev and streaming media business called Spider Eye . His team had done some amazing things like the webcast of the Mushroom 25th Anniversary concert. He had lots of other businesses prior to Spidereye, including selling technology to Microsoft, which was included in VB and VS. (More info about him on his blog). Gary has been one of the smartest guys I have had the pleasure to work with, and who seemed to have a good handle on the old work-life balance challenge too. He wrote a wonderful post earlier in the year - Windows Vista: Past Its Due Date Already - which details some of his experiences way back when, with some interesting parallels. So, when he has something to say, I pay attention. In his latest post, he outlines 4 “bet-the-company” steps Scrap the Windows codebase forever . Release Vista, and announce publicly that it will be the last version of Windows based upon the NT/Win32 platform. Use Linux as the base operating system for the next generation of Windows. Do not modify it, do not “Microsoftize” it. Do not try to own it. Exploit it. Reinvent the Desktop. Call it Windows. Windows: The Next Generation. Outdo Apple, outdo the current platform, outdo every “Linux desktop” effort in existence. Put applications first. Office TNG, Project TNG, Excel TNG, Outlook TNG. Do not port. Rewrite. Do not create a Win32 compatibility layer. Do it right. Hmmm I await the next few posts before I pass comment.
